He succeeded the late R. T. Ca 1 CONC rothers, and was in turn succeeded by George J. F. Falkenst 1 CONC ein, the present city treasurer. It was during his term o 1 CONC f mayor that he gave up the practice of medicine. 1 CONT 1 CONT While mayor, Dr. Black gained nation-wide recognition and p 1 CONC rominence for his activities in behalf of the workingmen wh 1 CONC en the big strike developed at the tube company. While h 1 CONC e never held any public elective office outside the city, h 1 CONC e was widely known in politics all over the state. 1 CONT 1 CONT Dr. Black was the postmaster at the Pan-American Expositio 1 CONC n held in San Francisco several years ago, and also took th 1 CONC e soldier vote on the Mexican border and in the south withi 1 CONC n the past coule of years. All thses appointments were mad 1 CONC e by Gov. Martin G. Brumbaugh. He also was a Roosevelt del 1 CONC egate to the last Republican national convention, held in C 1 CONC hicago, and was personally known, perhaps, to more voters i 1 CONC n the state than any other McKeesporter and could call thou 1 CONC sands by name. 1 CONT 1 CONT One of Dr. Black's famous sayings was "The signature tha 1 CONC t make the $10,000,000 tube works a reality." made after h 1 CONC e had signed an ordinance, as mayor vacating garbage furnac 1 CONC e property in the old Third ward, just before the new mill 1 CONC s were built several years ago. He was a frequent caller a 1 CONC t city hall, and was generally able to predict the result o 1 CONC f elections, both local and sate, with uncanny accuracy. W 1 CONC hen the commission form of government became effective in t 1 CONC his city, Dr. Black was a candidate for the first council 1 CONC , but was defeated. He also was defeated some years ago fo 1 CONC r congress from his district. 1 CONT 1 CONT Dr. Black was a familiar figure about city hall, which he v 1 CONC isited almost daily, and general regret ws expressed ther 1 CONC e this morning over his death, Mayor Lysle said: "McKeespor 1 CONC t has lost a very good citizen in ex-Mayor Black and his fa 1 CONC m (portion cut off) 1 CONT 1 CONT hundreds of newspapermen and during his term as mayor was w 1 CONC hat is know to the profession as "good copy." He had a gre 1 CONC at respect for the boys of the press and only recently sai 1 CONC d that his confidence with reporters had been broken but on 1 CONC ce, and that time by an out-of-town reporter. 1 CONT 1 CONT He was a member of McKeesport council No. 109, Jr. O.U.A.M 1 CONC . McKeesport Acric No. 285, Fraternal Order of Eagles, McKe 1 CONC esport Tent No. 93, Macabees and the Woodmen of the World 1 CONC . The body is to be removed to the home of his uncle, F. H 1 CONC . Coursin, 502 Arlington avenue, this afternoon, and the fu 1 CONC neral services will be held there on Monday evening at 8 o' 1 CONC clock, in charge of the Rev. Edward Babcock, pastor of th 1 CONC e First Baptist church. Interment will be in Versailles ce 1 CONC metery on Tuesday. It is likely that city officials will a 1 CONC tend the services in a body. 1 CONT 1 CONT Dr. Black is survived by his widow, Mrs. M. Blanche Coursi 1 CONC n-Black, whom he married in June, 1889, and two sons, Rober 1 CONC t J. Black Jr., who is in the national army at Camp Lee, Va 1 CONC ., and B. Coursin Black, at home. 1 CONT 1 CONT =============== 1 CONT 1 CONT Mayoral history from same newspaper: 1 CONT 1 CONT Next to be ushered into the office of Mayor was Dr. Rober 1 CONC t J. Black, whose term was probably the most turbulent of a 1 CONC ll. Trouble began immediately when his opponent, A. B. O'N 1 CONC eil charged fraud and his election was contested. 1 CONT 1 CONT Dr. Black had been elected by a single vote in more than 50 1 CONC 00 ballots cast. Election returns were late in being repor 1 CONC ted, especially from the first district of the Third Ward 1 CONC . The polls were in the office of Alderman B. L. Coursin, b 1 CONC rother-in-law of Dr. Black. 1 CONT 1 CONT Mr. O'Neil charged that returns there were "held back" an 1 CONC d that intentionally or otherwise, the count was incorrect 1 CONC . It ws claimed that some figures of totals, after the Thi 1 CONC rd Ward district had been tabulated, showed Black a winne 1 CONC r by 101 votes, but when the Return board reported he wa 1 CONC s a single vote ahead. 1 CONT 1 CONT The contest dragged along. Toward the end of Mr. Black's te 1 CONC rm it fizzled out. He finished the term and the contest wa 1 CONC s forgotten. 1 CONT 1 CONT Mayor Black was a great news source. During his term, sever 1 CONC al strikes took place. I recall one incident in which a wo 1 CONC rker raced into a Locust St. butcher shop, snatched a larg 1 CONC e knife and, warning the crowd, walked several blocks to hi 1 CONC s home with a mob giving him plenty of room. 1 CONT 1 CONT At this time, the National Tube Co. announced the intentio 1 CONC n to rebuild the mills at a cost of $10,000,000. Everybod 1 CONC y was interested. Real estate prices jumped and the compan 1 CONC y threatened to leave the city unless old Bowery district l 1 CONC and prices came down. 1 CONT 1 CONT Citizens subscribed to a fund and raised a large sum and fi 1 CONC mally the land was bought and new milld apparently assured 1 CONC , but mayor Black still held a trump card. 1 CONT 1 CONT The mayor, much in the limelight during strikes, one of whi 1 CONC ch brought reporters from New York and other cities here, d 1 CONC isliked some of the visiting newsmen after one sent out a s 1 CONC tory naming a cocktail after the Mayor. 1 CONT 1 CONT However, though he and mill managers were not good friends 1 CONC , he had the last say about the new mills. The city counci 1 CONC ls (dual system) noted to give acres of streets and aleys a 1 CONC nd city-owned land in the Bowery district for the new plant 1 CONC . Mayor Black held back his signature to the gift bills un 1 CONC til the last moment, but signed in the end. 1 CONT 1 CONT News to the last, the Mayor said: 1 CONT 1 CONT "Here goes with the signature that makes the $10,000,000 Tu 1 CONC be Works a reality." 1 CONT 1 CONT Mayor Black ran for many offices, once for Congress, and h 1 CONC e served as a postmaster at a big exposition in San Francis 1 CONC co. 0 @I26@ INDI 1 NAME Mary Jane /Hodgson/ 2 GIVN Mary Jane 2 SURN Hodgson 2 SOUR @S2@ 2 SOUR @S3@ 2 SOUR @S4@ 2 SOUR @S5@ 1 NAME Mary /Jane/ 2 GIVN Mary 2 SURN Jane 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE Dec 1849 2 SOUR @S3@ 2 SOUR @S4@ 2 SOUR @S5@ 1 DEAT 2 DATE 4 Sep 1916 2 SOUR @S3@ 2 SOUR @S4@ 2 SOUR @S5@ 2 SOUR @S2@ 1 BURI 2 PLAC McKeesport Versailles Cemetery 2 SOUR @S2@ 1 SOUR @S2@ 1 EVEN Alt.
