Conrad was a shoemaker. He lived close to Mercer, Penn., at Volant Nee Shawnee Creek, between Mercer and Newcastle, in Lawrence Co. He was a very devout and religious man and always had morning and evening prayers. At one time a party called while the family was at evening prayer and, when informed that they were at prayer, the party said,
Well, they won't be long at that.'' A boy standing close by said,
You are mistaken. Mr. Shawgo has gotten only as far as the Jones family. He is asking blessings by the A, B, Cs.'' (This story was told by Ella Shawgo Watt, a granddaughter of Conrad.)
Conrad Shawgo was among the first settlers in Mechanicsville in Irwin Township, Venango County.
